My top 5 movies of 2016

Looking back to 2016, I did not get to see as many movies in theaters as I had hoped. However, I did catch-up as they came available on various outlets. Of those, here are my top five favorite:

1. Star Wars: Rogue One

I thought this was an excellent addition to the franchise. When talking to family members, we tried to rank the Star Wars movies in order of our own preference. For me, I place the films in this order:

(1) #4 — A New Hope
(2) #5 — The Empire Strikes Back
(3) #6 — Return of the Jedi
(4) #7 — The Force Awakens
(5) #8 — Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
(6) #1 — The Phantom Menace
(7) #2 — Attack of the Clones
(8) #3 — Revenge of the Sith

2. The BFG

I will likely catch grief for this choice but, I really enjoyed this film.

3. Star Trek Beyond

This movie was not as strong as the previous entries into the rebooted franchise but, it was still a strong entry. There have been so many different films in the ST movie series, with several different casts, that I find it unproductive to attempt to rank the films. I do believe William Shatner remains the ultimate Captain, with Sir Patrick Stewart coming in second based on his powerful (almost Shakespearean) way he plays a starship Captain, and Chris Pine in third place–though his physicality in his acting is perhaps the best of the three majors in the franchise.

4. Pete’s Dragon

Another film that surprised me–thought this was wonderful fun to watch.

5. Sully

I recall the events of the airplane coming down on the Hudson River in 2009. I was not as aware of the troubles Captain Chesley Sullenberger (Sully) endured after the event. This film takes us through the events of that fateful flight, the crew’s heroic steps to save every person on board, and the investigation that ensued afterward. I thoroughly enjoyed this film.

Those are my top five. What were your favorite movies of 2016?
